The Mario maker himself has said he prefers developing his classic franchises above casual games.
After an E3 conference highlighted by Wii Sports Resort and Wii Music, hordes of self-identified hardcore gamers felt that Nintendo was committed to casual games that weren’t targeted to their fan base.
Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo’s man behind the company’s best-selling franchises, sees casual games as a sign of industry growth.
“The games industry was really narrowing to a very core set of gamers,” said Miyamoto. “So I think it’s a really good thing to see the industry moving in a direction where it is attracting more gamers. At Nintendo, we are very fortunate to have achieved such a large share of that.”
That said, he admits that he still personally prefers designing longer, classic games.
“Making these ‘traditional’ games is what I am best at,” he said.
He explained, “Because games of that nature take upwards of two or three years to make, we always have to keep the teams working on those projects going. At any given time, the team could be five to ten people, or it could be 50-plus. People are always switching in and out of those teams. They are all working on more Mario, Zelda and Pikmin projects. And they all work in close proximity to me, so I can keep a good eye on them.”
