The Mortal Kombat series is going back to where it all began, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be a little bit wiser when it gets there.
Making games is a very different skill to playing them, and even more so when you’re talking about playing them to a professional level. Knowing this, NetherRealm Studios brought in some experts to help them make the new Mortal Kombat, in the hope of making the game more appealing to hardcore fighting game fans.
NetherRealm’s Ed Boon said that while it was important that casual players could pick up a controller and have a good time playing Mortal Kombat, the studio wanted to make sure that it was also a game that rewarded those who took the time to really investigate the depths of its systems. Based on feedback from the experts, Mortal Kombat’s characters – many of whom are returning from the first three games in the series – are better defined than they had been in the past, with much clearer strengths and weaknesses. Also included is the ability to “enhance, modify, or interrupt” special moves, techniques that have been a component of the Street Fighter series and other 2D fighting games for some time.
As someone whose expertise with fighting games falls between the “advanced beginner” and “occasionally almost decent” poles, it’s a relief to hear that the new Mortal Kombat will be casual friendly, but seeing some professionals square off with MK’s colorful roster of characters sounds pretty exciting.
Mortal Kombat comes out for Xbox 360 and PS3 sometime next year.
