Everyone has been pumped about Pokémon’s repetitive farming sim, Pokopia, and a trend has started flooding social media using its whimsical lettering to share messages. However, when the White House used the trending format to tweet “Make America Great Again,” there was major backlash from some in the Pokémon community.
Now, Pokémon Company International has responded, and it’s pretty weak.
A spokesperson recently wrote: “We are aware of recent social content that includes imagery associated with our brand. We were not involved in its creation or distribution, and no permission was granted for the use of our intellectual property.
“Our mission is to bring the world together, and that mission is not affiliated with any political viewpoint or agenda.”
Pokémon community still not happy
There was an immense amount of backlash to the White House’s use of Pokopia to share what many believe is racist rhetoric on X (formerly Twitter). This turned into anger toward the Pokémon Company itself, with many wondering why there was no statement distancing them from the tweet — some even wanted them to sue the White House. I mean, they sue everyone else.
A lot of Pokémon players announced that they were no longer going to be playing Pokopia due to Trump’s use of the Pokopia font (despite loving the game).
However, it doesn’t look like the Pokémon Company is taking it as far as a lawsuit. This created even more hostility surrounding the tweet, with some calling out the Pokémon Company for not opposing the Trump Administration and others calling them hypocrites for trying to remain politically neutral despite Animal Crossing having an official partnership with Joe Biden five years ago. Uh yeah, a game that isn’t from the Pokémon Company…
This is just the latest incident of the White House using a video game to create buzz on X.
