Nintendo Announces Free Month of Wii Fit U, Wii Sports‘ Return

Nintendo wants *you* to get in shape.

Wii U owners with a Wii Fit balance board can play Wii Fit U for a free month starting Nov. 1. After the trial, players can keep the game by purchasing a Fit Meter, an activity meter that measures the number of steps you take in addition to the intensity of action and elevation. The fit meter is $20 and will also be available Nov. 1. It displays the amount of calories burned, your target goal for how many calories you wish to burn, the difference in elevation from your home, and various graphs. This information can be examined more closely on the Wii Fit U.

The one-month free trial ends Jan. 31. A packaged version will be available Dec. 13 — cleverly timed for everyone’s New Year resolutions. Wii Fit U and the fit meter will cost $50, while the game, fit meter, and balance board will cost $90. The digital version will be released on Feb. 1.

Also announced in today’s direct was Wii Sports Club, the new version of the five sports games in Wii Sports, which came out in 2006 alongside the Wii. Wii Sports Club uses HD graphics, Wii MotionPlus, and an online multiplayer mode, but overall it looks very similar to the original. Each individual sport costs $10. Downloading Wii Sports Club includes a 24-hour trial period to the games and a “Day Pass” for $3. Tennis and bowling will be available in the Nintendo eShop on Nov. 7. Boxing, baseball, and golf will be available in the future.

Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s president, said this is the perfect time for families to upgrade to the Wii U for getting and staying active.
