This article is over 7 years old and may contain outdated information

Sneak into the lair of the heretics on your quest to rescue Lynn in Chapter 5 of The Escapist’s walkthrough to Outlast 2.

The tight, narrow corridors of the mining complex don’t give Blake much room to maneuver around the jabbering, babbling naked heretics that appear and attack from every angle. Grisly displays of torture and creepy rituals are everywhere, and there are even some basic puzzles to solve between chases.

This is a pretty lengthy sequence, in Outlast 2 terms, so buckle-up and prepare for a deep dive into “The Descent”.

Leviticus Pt. 1: The Descent

Taking the elevator down into the mine shafts proper, your ride gets caught on steel. On the ride down, exit through the door and slide behind the shaft, dropping through the missing wire. Of course, the shaft collapses at the bottom.

Follow the straightforward path through the mines. Use the tracks to guide you forward. A few creatures will crawl around in your vision, but don’t be afraid yet. Ahead, you’ll find a small room with a ladder, after hearing Lynn’s voice. Crawl in the water to slip under and use the ladder to reach the lower level.

At the bottom, a shadow demon will appear in the distance. This is the jawless, multi-armed thing that assaults Blake in his school dreams. Don’t worry, it can’t hurt you here. The passage will collapse, so enter the road to the right. It leads to a creepy display of more corpses in roots.

In the second heretic chamber, crawl into the small passage and grab an extra battery. Ahead, climb up and into another area with a locked deadbolt door on the left. To the right, you’ll find an extra battery.

Remove the deadbolt, and enter the passage. Heretics are patrolling ahead. Instead of going through the cavern, look to the right wall for a narrow space. Slip into the narrow space, squeeze through, and enter the path to the left. There’s a door with the deadbolt unlocked. Go through, turn right, and continue forward toward the light.

Beware, monsters will appear in the distance. Retreat back to the area you just visited – use the narrow space and the barrels to hide, then slip out and sprint back the swarm of creatures. When you’ve given them the slip, you’ll be able to enter the hallway lined with corpses.

Beyond the corpse walls, the track path will split – left or right. Go right, as a cart filled with junk is blocking your path. On the right path, sprint down the steps and through the door. Deadbolt and push the metal shelf over the door to stop the incoming creatures. There’s a bandage inside – use this safe place to heal.

Wait a moment and the monsters will lose you. Return to the fork and pull the cart backwards. When it’s far enough back, use the lever on the right of the tracks to change directions. Now that the tracks are switched, push the cart to the right side. Now Blake can go down the left passage and slip under the barrier wall.

At the campfire ahead, crawl into the tiny opening to the right. It leads to a long stairwell. Try to ignore the creepy singing, and you’ll find a frightening display at the bottom of the stairs. Down below, you’ll get captured by the creatures and face the leader of the heretics – Val. She’s donned her crown and covered herself in mud. Don’t look back, just start running.
