Ratchet & Clank On PS4 Isn’t Just a Remake

Insomniac Game’s return to the Ratchet & Clank franchise won’t be a remake, but an entirely new game.

When we first heard about the Ratchet & Clank movie at E3 last year and its accompanying PS4 game, we were told it was a “re-imagining” of the original PS2 game. Now, Insomniac is telling us it is an entirely new game, built from the ground up, that is simply inspired by the original game.

In a blog post accompanying the gameplay footage you’ll see above, community lead James Stevenson explains that while Insominac did initially start out making a play-for-play remake, it’s now ended up with something new. “We started out thinking of Ratchet & Clank as a ‘re-imagining’ of the 2002 original, revised to tie in with the deeper version of Ratchet’s origin story as seen in the film,” he said.

“We ended up with a new game, with elements based on the original – but now with modern controls, several new planets, new and updated gameplay segments, all-new Clank gameplay, all new boss fights, new flight sequences, and more, all constructed to take advantage of the PS4’s graphical prowess.”

For example, “In the PS4 version of Ratchet & Clank the majority of the arsenal are weapons that weren’t in the original game.”

Stevenson promises more info on the game will be revealed at this year’s E3.
