Return to Monkey Island reveal announcement trailer Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman original designers back

31 Years Later, Return to Monkey Island Is a Monkey Island 2 Sequel from Original Creators

The Lucasfilm Games revival has been bearing fruit. Titles like Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga look to be fun video games. And while Star Wars games are all well and good, there’s something charming about LucasArts’ older titles — especially the Monkey Island series of point-and-click adventures. Now, all these years after the release of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge, a sequel from original creator Ron Gilbert has been announced called Return to Monkey Island. It will launch this year.

Here’s a teaser trailer for the game:

Not much to go on, but for fans of the franchise, it’s more than enough. We see the title’s art style, hear the original game’s music, and witness a talking skull fall into the ocean. Original designers Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman return, as well as Guybrush Threepwood himself, Dominic Armato.

If you are wondering why the other three titles in the Monkey Island series weren’t mentioned, that’s because the original designers had nothing to do with the franchise after Monkey Island 2. Return to Monkey Island is a true follow-up to that game, and perhaps we will finally learn what the real Secret of Monkey Island is after all this time.

Look for Return to Monkey Island later this year, courtesy of Devolver Digital, Lucasfilm Games, and Terrible Toybox. No platforms have been announced of as yet.
