Notoriously eccentric game designer Richard Garriot was chosen as the official to preside over the first ever Zero-G wedding.

We’re going to play a little game here for a second: Pretend you’re a nerd (I know, I know, you’re here on The Escapist, it’s a bit of a stretch – just humor me and try). As a total sci-fi geek, you and your significant other to whom you are engaged – also a sci-fi geek – decide that the best way to share your mutual sci-fi geekery would be to get married while weightless. Since buying a trip into space is for crazy celebrities like that one dude from ‘N Sync (and he didn’t get to go anyway,) you decide to do the next best thing and book a flight on one of those crazy Zero-G simulator planes for your wedding party.

Oh, and since you’re really a sci-fi geek, you decide to have the weightless wedding (the first ever of its kind) officiated by none other than Lord British himself: Ultima and Tabula Rasa Lead Game Nutcase, Richard Garriot. Well, that is in fact what New York-based couple Erin Finnegan and Noah Fulmor did, as they tied the knot miles above the Gulf of Mexico last Saturday.

Let’s consider this for a moment. This is a couple getting married in simulated weightlessness in a ceremony officiated by Richard Garriot. I’m fairly certain that I could never have imagined I would ever find myself writing that sentence, but there it is.

I didn’t even know Richard Garriot was licensed to marry people. That’s kind of mind-blowing in and of itself.
