A release date trailer shows off some of the game’s mind-bending visuals, in addition to highlighting how its roguelite sidescroller gameplay uses procedurally generated monsters to create fear of the unknown. On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S, players will play at upward of 4K resolution at 60 FPS, while those on last-gen consoles will receive 1080p at 60 FPS. The Nintendo Switch version targets 60 FPS at 1080p docked and 720p handheld.

Source of Madness focuses on giving players an unpredictable Lovecraftian experience, where “billions of permutations of procedurally generated beasts born of a neural network” will ensure a fresh, scary experience. To fight these monsters, you will choose between five classes, collect gear and items, and unlock assorted magic abilities. Here is more about the game’s twisted world:

Source of Madness puts players in the role of an acolyte in an alternate reality controlled by cosmic entities. These worlds warp and distort each day, leaving the Loam Lands unpredictably terraformed and inhabited by grotesque beings of celestial origins. To get to the source of this unknowable evil, your voyage will take you across nine biomes, from the depths of Dungeon of Forgotten Knowledge, the eerie landscape of the Forest of Lies, to the grand non-euclidean citadel R’Lyeh, all the way up to celestial bodies on the rims of the universe.

Source of Madness has been available to play in Steam Early Access since September 2021. Carry Castle CEO Per Fornander explained that the feedback from early access has helped them realize their goal of creating meaningful and terrifying procedural generation that goes beyond just randomized level layouts: “We knew we were opening Pandora’s box by unleashing so many permutations of machine learning AI monstrosities, but thanks to our audience of Early Access players, we were able to ensure that this multi-platform launch is as polished as can be.”

Source of Madness will remain available to purchase for $16.99 until the full launch this May, when its price will see a slight increase to $19.99 / €19.99 / £16.99.
