Square Enix president Yoichi Wada has voiced his concerns about the Japanese game industry.

While the Japanese government plans to bolster the gaming industry in Japan, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada has voiced his concerns about the current situation. “We are approaching a crossroads that will determine whether or not [gaming] can be established as an industry,” he warned.

Japanese news outlet Nikkei BP points out that Wada’s concerns are related to the organizational aspects of game publishing and development, such as: project management, team building and human-resources. Wada also went on to complain that the industry doesn’t do enough to attract IT specialists to the industry.

“In the US, the game industry is a very desirable employment destination that attracts the talented technical specialists, technology is indispensable to innovation in games. It isn’t everything, but it’s the means for producing new [games]. Innovation that isn’t grounded in technology is inconceivable.”
