Tabletop gaming company ArcKnight has already raised more than $20,000 toward its goal of producing durable plastic pawns for every RPG occasion.
Tabletop RPGs can be a wonderful experience. That being the case, they can also be very incredibly expensive affairs, especially if you’re a dungeon master looking to build up a library of miniatures to handle every situation that your players could possibly stumble into. And while recent years have seen the emergence of new companies and Kickstarters aimed at making the process of procuring minis easier, few have dealt with the issue of cost.
Enter ArcKnight. A two-man miniatures operation, its goal is to produce a new line of durable plastic pawns that players and DMs alike will be able to purchase en masse and on the cheap. Toward that end the company recently launched a Kickstarter with the hope of raising $10,000 to create “hundreds of affordable quality tokens printed on transparent plastic with front and back art.” According to ArcKnight co-founder Joshua Wardrop, this dream stemmed from his and co-creator Philip Krog-Sorensen’s own difficulties creating miniatures for a game.
“We’d been working on our own RPG for years as a semi-passive endeavor, and then converted it over to a tactics/RPG board game,” he said, speaking to The Escapist. “So we had this board game; we have cards, we have maps, but still nothing in the token department.”
Hoping to find a solution “without the obvious flaws of cardboard, paper and wooden” game pieces, they created a custom token made from transparent plastic and using a specialized printer. “We’re printing directly onto the plastic surface,” explained Wardrop. “Comparatively, these are FAR stronger than any other type of mini or component you can imagine.”
Wardrop and Krog-Sorensen (assuming their Kickstarter reaches all of its stretch goals) are currently planning on releasing five packs containing 62 pawns each. Each of these will retail for $25 each. The Kickstarter itself has, as of the writing, already raised more than $20,000 and still has 50 days left until its countdown comes to a close.
