Tekken’s producer reckons his series’ cast might not appeal to Smash Bros. fans.
Since Namco Bandai is co-developing the currently untitled Super Smash Bros. installment for Wii U and 3DS, it’s a given that a few of the developer/publisher’s more notable characters might make it into the game. The elephant in the room is whether or not Namco will allow characters from Tekken to appear in a rival fighting game. Tekken producer, Katsuhiro Harada, doesn’t seem too keen on the idea.
“The fans, rather than asking about Tales or Gundam or some of our other franchises, the fans abroad saw Tekken as one of the key words and took off on that,” he told NowGamer. “We’re not really sure at this moment but when thinking of the player base who is playing Smash Bros., maybe Tekken characters is something they wouldn’t want, so I’ve been pulling back on that a bit. But I don’t know.”
Harada perhaps has a point, Smash Bros. has traditionally pulled characters from non-fighting games, which to me, seems to be part of the appeal. To make things more awkward, Tekken mainstay, Heihachi Mishima, has been confirmed to appear in Sony’s take on the all-star brawler formula, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.
Harada called the upcoming Smash Bros. game a “big priority” for Namco-Bandai, and that the company has “a lot of people” from its numerous franchises working on the project.
Perhaps Harada is hesitant to put Tekken characters in the game because he’s afraid they might be … Tekken for granted.
I’ll show myself out.
