This is the greatest and best convention in the world … tribute.
Next Friday, Blizzard kicks off BlizzCon, its gigantic two-day self-celebration featuring everything you could possibly imagine for the Diablo, Warcraft and StarCraft franchises. After last year’s appearance by Ozzy Osbourne, the convention has also garnered a bit of a reputation as having awesome musical acts.
I can see no reason for said reputation to diminish this year, either: Blizzard has revealed that Jack Black and Kyle Gass – better known as comedy/rock duo Tenacious D – will be taking the stage at Anaheim next weekend to bring the house down. While perhaps not as iconic a musical act as the Ozz, you can’t say that the humor-metal stylings of Tenacious D don’t appeal to the gamer crowd at all.
“The best way to wrap up two days of epic entertainment is with an epic rock concert-and few bands fit the bill like Tenacious D,” said Mike Morhaime, Blizzard cofounder and CEO. “We’re looking forward to a great show and can’t wait to see what Jack and Kyle have in store for everyone attending BlizzCon and watching from home.”
I mean, that was the entire gimmick behind Jack Black’s appearance in Brutal Legend, wasn’t it? You know, the game that was infamously dropped by Vivendi Games’ partner Activision? Ooh, awkward.
Given that BlizzCon tickets are A.) already sold out and B.) notoriously difficult to come by, the odds that Tenacious D’s presence at the show would influence anyone to try and attend are slim to none – though you could always buy the Pay-Per-View, I suppose. Still, everybody who is going will be getting a nice musical treat courtesy of Mr. Black and Mr. Gass. Fun times.
