The Force Unleashed Coming To PC (Or Not)

Star Wars fans in the keyboard-and-mouse crowd will be happy to hear that The Force Unleashed is apparently coming to the PC.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun sent a super-secret spy to the NVISION 08 conference to uncover the news, which came during an address by Vik Sohal, chief operating officer of Pixelux Entertainment, developer of the game’s physics technology. “…Just been released last week on the internet, The Force Unleashed demo on both the PS3 and Xbox 360,” he said. “We have a PC version as well.”

Sohal also said the company “relied heavily on GPU acceleration” for the game’s physics, which according to the report makes it likely to be the first “high-profile” game to do so.

It may be asking for a lot, but hopefully the PC version will include some tweaks and additional content to spiff the game up a bit; despite the hype, LucasArts’ latest awkward addition to the Star Wars mythos has failed to impress the critics, garnering sub-par reviews and a Metacritic score of 68. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is set to launch on September 16 for the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii, as well as in various handheld formats.

EDIT: As one intrepid reader has already pointed out, Rock, Paper, Shotgun has since retracted its story about The Force Unleashed coming for PC. The site says that both Vik Sohal and LucasArts have been in touch, and LucasArts was very clear in its denial of a PC release.

“I can tell you definitively that there is no PC version of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed planned,” a LucasArts rep said. “I would assume Vik was talking about a PC version of Digital Molecular Matter.”

RPS stands by the information it received and says it has an audio recording of Sohal making the statement exactly as it was quoted, but adds that Sohal must have “expressed it badly,” resulting in the misunderstanding.
