The Riftbreaker Review in 3 Minutes: Outstanding Base-Building Survival

The Riftbreaker is a base-building action RPG from EXOR Studios that sees you try to survive on a foreign and hostile planet with nothing but a mech suit and its advanced AI to help you. In order to prepare for humanity to leave a dying Earth, commando/scientist Ashley is sent to set up a sustainable base and use the resources found to open a rift gate back to Earth.

Ashley and the mech suit AI Mr. Riggs, as she calls it, work in tandem to complete their mission. The dynamic works well as Ashley is full of wonder and obsessed with discovery while Mr. Riggs prioritizes the mission, scolding Ashley when she doesn’t take the dangers of their situation seriously enough. The story is mainly yours to create in how you struggle to meet each milestone. Ashley’s history and bits of larger exposition get revealed in pleasant  conversations between the two characters that build on their relationship as you get closer to building a bridge home. But first you’ll need to build a secure base of operations.

Ultimately, The Riftbreaker injects a healthy dose of action into a masterfully constructed base-building survival game, and it looks good doing it. If you’re normally not a fan of this genre, there’s a high chance this could be your gateway. The game is out now for $29.99 on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox Game Pass.
