Ubisoft has announced Heroes of Might and Magic Kingdoms, a new web-based addition to the Heroes of Might and Magic franchise.

The new release is a persistent-world strategy game set in the Heroes of Might and Magic universe, putting thousands of players on the thrones of virtual kingdoms from which they can master trades, create heroes and lead massive armies against one another. The game will run entirely through standard browsers, with no downloads or external installations required, and can be played in stretches as long or as short as the player desires.

“This is a new type of game for Ubisoft, one that allows you to jump into a rich and complex universe just with your web browser,” said Ubisoft Chief Creative Officer Serge Hascoët. “Heroes of Might and Magic Kingdoms will open a wide door to the Might and Magic universe, allowing players to immerse themselves within it unlike ever before.”

First launched in 1986 with Might and Magic: The Secret of the Inner Sanctum for DOS, Apple II, Commodore 64 and others, the Might and Magic franchise continued through nine releases and spun off several other series, including Heroes of Might and Magic, Crusaders of Might and Magic and others. Ubisoft acquired the rights to the franchise in 2003, which led to a “reboot” of the series and an end to the existing Might and Magic continuity.

An exclusive beta key for the game is hidden in Heroes of Might and Magic Complete Edition, and interested gamers can also register at www.hommkingdoms.com. Heroes of Might and Magic Kingdoms is currently scheduled to launch in spring 2008.
