3 upcoming MMO expansions to keep an eye out for

A new expansion in an MMO is always exciting news, whether you’re a brand new player or a long-time fan of the franchises. Expansions tend to add to a game’s main storyline, giving players new end-game content to tackle or new quests to explore.

It’s set to be a brilliant period for the MMO community as 2025 comes to a close and 2026 rears its head. Here are 3 upcoming MMO expansions to keep an eye out for, including everything known so far about their release dates.

• The period of late 2025 – early 2026 should have plenty for MMO fans to get excited about, with some of the biggest names in the genre releasing new expansions.
• Guild Wars 2: Visions of Eternity will be dropping on October 28, 2025, taking place on the vibrant island of Castora.
• Destiny 2: Renegades is a Star Wars-esque expansion that’ll be releasing in December 2025, with more details being announced on September 9, 2025.
• World of Warcraft: Midnight is due to release in 2026, marking the second entry in the Worldsoul Saga trilogy.

Guild Wars 2: Visions of Eternity (October 28, 2025)

Guild Wars 2 fans have lots to get hyped about in the next couple of months – Visions of Eternity will be launching on October 28, 2025, as per the official game site.

This vibrant expansion will be taking place on the island of Castora, focusing on secretive Inquest missions at the behest of Tyria’s leaders. There will be two open world regions for players to explore at launch, adding greatly to the GW2 world. 

Launch day won’t mark the end of this, though – more content will be dropping in three quarterly releases across 2026. This means that there’ll always be something new to look forward to, no matter your personal playstyle. 

Destiny 2: Renegades (December 2025)

Making up part of the Year of Prophecy in Destiny 2, Renegades is an upcoming expansion that should be a hit with fans of Star Wars based on the aesthetic shown off in the teaser trailer. The world looks mysterious and deadly, which is always a promising combination. 

Not much is known about Renegades yet, other than the fact it’s part of the Year of Prophecy and that it’ll be a December 2025 release. An exact release date has not been confirmed yet at the time of writing. 

More details will be revealed in a full reveal taking place on September 9, 2025, though, which should expand on the expansion’s lore and new features.

World of Warcraft: Midnight (2026)

Arguably one of the most anxiously-awaited MMO expansions in recent years, Midnight will be launching in 2026. It’ll be the second part of the Worldsoul Saga for World of Warcraft, with a rich, void-drenched story and bags of end-game content to tear through.

An exact release date has not been confirmed at the time of writing, but based on the pre-order page information, it seems as if the expansion will release on or before June 30, 2026. This article will be updated with further information once it becomes available.

It’s set to be a solid end to the year for the MMO community, with Guild Wars 2, Destiny 2, and World of Warcraft all gearing up for major expansion releases. Visions of Eternity, Renegades, and Midnight all seem like they’ll go down well with their respective communities, with more details set to come out in the near future for the latter two.
