need for speed heat, criterion games, ea, cross-play

Need for Speed Heat is getting cross-play on all platforms, marking the first time an EA game will take advantage of the consumer-friendly feature. Criterion Games General Manager Matt Webster shared the news in a blog post on EA’s website, saying that the addition will arrive tomorrow, June 9, as the driving game’s final update.

The update comes as the studio is transitioning to work on the next Need for Speed title. Webster didn’t give too much away, saying that the team at Criterion is always looking for what players want out of the series:

Since the launch of Need for Speed Heat and as players continue to tear it up in Palm City, we’re listening to what you love about this experience, and what you all believe could be even better. With these insights, we have a terrific foundation to create the most expressive, most socially connected, action-packed game yet for Need for Speed fans and beyond.

EA announced that Criterion will oversee the Need for Speed games earlier this year.

The final update for Need for Speed Heat will open the gates for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One players to enjoy cross-play. In addition, EA will be expanding the player pool come June 16 when Need for Speed Heat drops into EA Access and the Origin Access Basic Vault, allowing all subscribers the chance to play for free.

EA just recently rescheduled its EA Play presentation, which will now take place at 4 p.m. PT on June 18.

Hey! My name is Michael, and I love video games. If you love them too, be sure to follow me on Twitter (@MikeCripe) where I’d love to talk more about it. Don’t worry though, I’ll probably only rant about Super Mario Sunshine half of the time.
