“I know what you did last Summer… because we already made this movie once before.”

Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson’s Scream may be turning into a series for MTV after an attempted theatrical revival was dead on arrival, but it looks like the 90’s other big original slasher series is sticking to the big screen: Sony is eyeing a remake of I Know What You Did Last Summer.

The new film will once again be based on the 1973 book by Lois Duncan, with Oculus writer/director Mike Flanagan and co-writer Jeff Howard. Neal Moritz, who produced the original, will do so once again. Sony is aiming to have the remake ready for 2016.

Released in 1997 and starring a cast of then-new talent including Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr and Ryan Phillippe; the original I Know What You Did Last Summer followed a group of high-school seniors who, after striking and killing an unknown person with their car in a hit-and-run accident, agree to hide the body and cover up the crime. One year later, they find themselves stalked by a mysterious hook-wielding killer who claims to know their secret. It was followed one year later by I Still Know What You Did Last Summer in 1998 and the straight-to-DVD I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer in 2006.
