Chalk lines are a thing of the past, now that Super Mario Bros. can be played on a sidewalk.
What do you do when you have both a high-end projector, a motion-tracking system, and just a little too much free time? There are certainly a lot of possibilities, but one digital artist created an interactive version of Super Mario Bros. that he projected on a local sidewalk and wall.
Andreas Heikaus (better known as “Surfap” on Vimeo) created this video with both a projector and a tracking system, though the details of the setup haven’t been revealed. To me, it almost looks like the game footage was inserted after the initial video was shot because the colors are so bright and crisp. That said, it also looks really slick.
Heikaus is clearly talented at what he does. His demo reel shows a wide range of work, including another appearance of Mario Bros. on the walls of a concrete stairwell. Personally, I’d love to see the artist give similar treatment to another classic sidescroller, maybe something like the original Sonic the Hedgehog.
