Capcom is set on returning the Resident Evil series to its horror roots in Resident Evil: Revelations for the 3DS – only players might be too scared to ever beat the game.
At Nintendo’s recent 3DS conference – you know, the one where we learned about the potentially-controversial price – Capcom talked up its duo of Resident Evil titles for the new 3D-capable handheld. While Resident Evil: Mercenaries 3D is aimed at fans who prefer the more “action-y” style of Resident Evil 5, Capcom’s RE team is well aware that some fans miss the horror stylings of the earlier games in the series.
“Resident Evil: Revelations is a pure horror game,” said a Capcom representative in a video comparing Revelations to Mercenaries 3D. “The fight against terror that is approaching you is a theme this time. Being able to experience it in 3D must be a great joy for the players.” In other words, it feels scarier when the demon dogs are jumping through windows right at you.
Not only is Revelations a “pure horror game,” but Capcom is already wondering if it’s too scary for gamers: “Right now all the members in the development team are making it so that in the end, it may even make players too scared to continue forward.”
If Capcom can actually deliver on this and make a horror game that scares gamers into being unable to finish, I will be very impressed – but for the moment I’m skeptical.
It is nice to see that the developer recognizes that it has two very distinct Resident Evil fanbases: one group that prefers a more action-packed title and one group that wants to be scared out of its wits.
