Minecraft Update Brings PSVR Support to PlayStation 4 This Month

Minecraft is getting PSVR support on PlayStation 4 sometime before the end of September. The VR news was announced in a PlayStation.Blog post from Minecraft Executive Producer Roger Carpenter and marks the first time this version of Mojang Studios’ popular sandbox title will be playable on consoles. The studio says fans will receive VR support via a simple update patch.

Nothing will change between the two versions other than the perspective, with Carpenter explicitly saying, “It is 100 percent the same Minecraft game that you can play every day, every week, every month, every year…on PlayStation 4.”

Players will have various new settings to toy around with to ensure the PSVR experience is to their liking, such as the Immersive and Living Room modes. As far as controls go, Carpenter says you’ll use the DualShock 4 to control your character, just as you would in the standard version of Minecraft on PlayStation 4.

Carpenter states that the team has been planning to bring PSVR support to Minecraft since Sony gave the OK to bring cross-play and the Bedrock version to PlayStation 4. He adds, “There was never any question of would we, just when.”

Mojang adding PSVR support for Minecraft kicks off Sony’s week of VR news, which was announced this morning. As the week progresses, stay tuned for more PSVR sales and announcements, but don’t expect anything involving the company’s upcoming PlayStation 5.
