New Street Fighter Flick Mauled By Critics

The latest video game movie to hit theatres, Street Fighter: Legend of Chun-Li has had a frosty reception from reviewers.

Let’s face it, no one expected Legend of Chun-Li to be any good. The 1994 movie wounded us deeply, and when the not-quite-a-sequel was withheld from critics, the alarm bells started ringing. So it comes as little surprise that critics have used the movie as their new scratching post, although the sheer brutality of the criticism means that we can at least get some enjoyment out of this stinker of a movie.

The kindest comment that Variety can muster is that the film is merely mediocre, but the LA Times is far harsher, saying: “Even with the low expectations The Legend of Chun Li engenders, it still somehow manages to be a letdown.”

The Onion steals the show however, with this comment: “The problems with Street Fighter: The Legend Of Chun-Li began with the casting of dead-eyed, sleepy-voiced, charisma-impaired automaton Kristin Kreuk.”

So there you have it, Street Fighter: Legend of Chun-Li is apparently just as bad, if not worse, than we all expected. Hollywood have had lots of tries at converting video games into movies, but apparently, they still haven’t cracked it yet. It does raise an interesting question though, will there ever be a good video game movie?
