Super Mario Galaxy 2 Could Use the Super Guide

Shigeru Miyamoto says Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be tough, but to alleviate casual gamer frustration may include the Super Guide feature from New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

In an interview with Official Nintendo Magazine, Shigeru Miyamoto sounded off on the possibility of incorporating the Super Guide into Super Mario Galaxy 2. The Super Guide debuted in New Super Mario Bros. Wii and is basically an auto-play feature that has a computer controlled character playing through any of the game’s levels to aid incapable playerw. Said players can jump into the character’s shoes at any time to take over and complete the level themselves.

Miyamoto did not confirm nor deny the inclusion of the Super Guide into Galaxy 2, but left the possibility open. “Whether or not we are going to incorporate the Super Guide, I just cannot tell … In general, wherever and whenever appropriate, I think we will want to incorporate that kind of thing, but I cannot commit to anything specific right now.” As for why it might be included, Miyamoto revealed: “Well, as far as the challenge of Super Mario Galaxy 2 is concerned, I think it’s going to be a really challenging game.”

New Super Mario Bros. Wii was already known to be challenging, and with Miyamoto now publicly stating that Galaxy 2 will have a similar bite, it looks like Nintendo could be less concerned with catering to the casual crowd with these titles. The ultimate game is something that appeals to both casual and hardcore gamers (see Blizzard), so maybe Nintendo wants to get back in contact with those that want more of a challenge.

The Super Guide should theoretically allow Nintendo to do so, giving the company the ability to create challenging games that can also be appreciated by casual gamers who might not be able to get the hang of more complex gameplay aspects, such as the whole spherical worlds thing. It does seem like it would be harder to program the Super Guide for Galaxy 2 than it was for New Super Mario Bros. Wii, what with the addition of the third dimension and all, but I’m sure Nintendo is up to the task.
