Samurai Jack Creator Returns With Giant Robots

The man behind some of Cartoon Network’s biggest hits is back, this time with a show about big robots, teenaged aliens, and high school cafeteria food.

Genndy Tartakovsky is a legend when it comes to animated TV shows. As either one of or the driving force behind shows like Dexter’s Laboratory, The Powerpuff Girls, and Samurai Jack (not to mention the superlative Star Wars: Clone Wars miniseries), it’s a reputation that’s certainly well-deserved. Now, Tartakovsky is returning to Cartoon Network with a new show that seems to have a little bit of everything: an epic space opera storyline, a sarcastic look at American high schools, and giant robots beating the snot out of each other.

Sym-Bionic Titan tells the story of two royal teenagers and a (normal-sized) robot who cross the cosmos to escape the general who’s conquered their homeworld. The group lands here on Earth and does their best to create new lives for themselves, part of which includes going to high school and dealing with the everyday horrors of cafeteria food and teenage cliques. Of course, they also happen to have robotic armor that can combine (a lá Voltron) to form a giant mecha capable of fending off even the nastiest threat the general can send their way.

Judging by the trailer, this looks like it’s going to be a blast. Tartakovsky’s clean style is still here, the fight scenes look great, and the high school parts seem like they could be genuinely funny.

Star Wars: Clone Wars is, in my opinion, one of the few good things to come about from the New Star Wars Trilogy. Because of that and Samurai Jack, I’m willing to check out anything that Tartakovsky’s been involved with. The first episode of Sym-Bionic Titan airs tonight at 8 PM on Cartoon Network.
