Lara Gets Serious in New Tomb Raider Teaser

Sadly, there aren’t a whole lot of tombs to see in the new trailer, not unless you’re a boat.

Lara Croft may very well once have been one of the most recognizable videogame characters around, but after lower than expected sales for Tomb Raider Underworld, developer Crystal Dynamics has gone back to the drawing board and rebooted the series right back to the beginning. Gone is the older, more confident Lara, and in her place is a younger, less experienced version, who looks like she’s in for a rough time if this teaser trailer is anything to go by.

If you’ve been keeping up with details about the new Tomb Raider, then the plot of the teaser won’t be too much of a surprise. The young Lara Croft embarks on her very first adventure, and it does not go well. Her ship is torn apart by a storm, leaving her stranded with very limited resources. According to the snippet of marketing blurb that accompanies the video, Lara is “armed with only the raw instincts and physical ability to push beyond the limits of human endurance,” although by the end of the trailer she has apparently found a bow and an ice axe as well.

Obviously, you can’t tell too much from the trailer, what with it lacking even a hint of gameplay footage, but as a statement of intent, it does a pretty decent job. Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics are giving this marketing campaign a long tail though, as the game doesn’t come out until Fall 2012.
