Black Developer Reveals Enemy Front

Enemy Front, the Second World War shooter being developed by Black creator Stuart Black, has finally been dragged out into the light.

Stuart Black, best known for the acclaimed 2006 shooter Black and its “spiritual successor” Bodycount, announced in December of 2010 that he was heading up a new studio working on a shooter set in World War Two. Not the most original idea in the world, perhaps, but Black [the guy, not the game] made it clear that he’s less interested in an accurate rendition of the war than in blending his particular brand of “gun porn” with the serious business of killing Nazis.

Today that game has been unveiled as Enemy Front, “the realistic tale of a hardened soldier dropped behind Nazi lines to engage in dynamic, diversified missions ranging from quick skirmishes [to] espionage assignments and sabotage activities.” That doesn’t sound quite like the over-the-top, Axis-massacring fun we were promised, does it?

It might be cool, though. The CryEngine 3-powered game will feature a complex plot spanning several years – most of the war, in other words – from occupied France to a secret base in Berlin, where the dirty Ratzis are working on a new superweapon that will guarantee them victory! And I think that takes a little air out of the “realism” balloon, so maybe there’s nothing to worry about after all.

Oh, and it will be gritty, too.

Enemy Front will be out sometime in 2012 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
