No Single Player for Command and Conquer: Generals 2

The reboot of EA’s popular modern warfare RTS franchise will focus on e-sports skirmish play.

Fans of Command and Conquer, one of the oldest RTS game franchises, will be aware that there’s a new game in the works: Command and Conquer: Generals 2. The initial announcement revealed it would be free-to-play, the first of many other Command and Conquer titles to come. Some further details have been revealed, among them that the game will not have a single player campaign, as the developer intends to focus on multiplayer online skirmish gaming.

Bioware general manager John Van Caneghem says that this is part of an overall strategy intended to “get back to the roots of what made Command & Conquer great.” Building zillions of units and blasting foes is what Bioware believes this franchise is all about, and Bioware thinks a story campaign isn’t integral to that experience. Multiplayer skirmish is what the developer intends to focus on, both co-op and competitive. This is all part of a plan to turn Command and Conquer into an e-sports series. “I don’t think we’re making a list of the features yet,” says Von Cagenhem, “but I think you can basically make a list of the assumed ones that you’d need to be an e-sports game, and it’s definitely part of the plan.”

Command and Conquer: Generals 2 will be the first to get the treatment, but other games in the series will follow. “We decided to choose Generals as the first set of games we build under the universe, but we’ll be expanding after that, like Tiberium and Red Alert as well as some others as well. But Generals 2 was the first one, and it was one of the biggest sellers, as well as the fanbase has been asking for it for some time.”
