The 11 Mythical Pokemon You Can Pick Up This Year

To celebrate 20 years of “Gotta Catch ’em All,” Nintendo will be helping us actually do just that, catch them all. Starting this month, a different mythical Pokemon will be available on the first of every month, so if you’ve ever wanted a Darkrai or a Celebi, now is your chance! Without further ado, here are the most elusive Pokemon of all time. Happy 20th Anniversary today, Pokemon.

February: Mew

Mew is a Psychic type Pokemon, the last in the Kanto Pokedex, and a central character in the first Pokemon film. Mew is notable for being able to learn any TM, HM, or Move Tutor move, so it definitely has its merit, but the fact that some of us have waited two decades makes this catch that much sweeter. You’ll be able to pick up Mew on the Nintendo Network and at Gamestop from February 1-24.

March: Celebi

Celebi is much like Mew, as it was only available through events and is the star of its own movie, Celebi: Voice of the Forest. This Psychic and Grass type Pokemon is known for its time travelling abilities, as well its power to cause vegetative growth at will. Celebi was also a major player in the game Pokemon Colosseum where it was able to cure shadow Pokemon of their ailment. Celebi will be available from March 1-24 on the Nintendo Network.

April: Jirachi

Jirachi is a Steel and Psychic type Pokemon that’s main appearance was in the film Jirachi: Wish Maker. This star-like Pokemon only comes out of hibernation every 1,000 years for seven days and is known for its ability to grant the wishes of those it deems worthy. With Jirachi’s Doom Desire move, which rains down harmful light from above, it is a powerful addition to any trainer’s party. You’ll be able to pick up Jirachi from the Nintendo Network April 1-24.

May: Darkrai

Darkrai is a Dark Type Pokemon from the Sinnoh region and is a part of the Lunar Duo Pokemon grouping with Cresselia. Darkrai made its big screen debut in the film The Rise of Darkrai and has only been available through special Nintendo events or trading. This Nightmare-based Pokemon is incredibly fast and the only one able to perform the move Dark Void, which causes other Pokemon to fall asleep. While that may seem cool, it’s all fun and games until Darkrai invades your dreams to give you nightmares. You’ll be able to pick up Darkrai from Gamestop May 1-24.

June: Manaphy

Manaphy is a Water-type Mythical Pokemon that guards the seas of the Pokemon world alongside Phione. Manaphy is notable for being one of the few Mythical Pokemon that can breed, although it most often spawns a Phione, which does not evolve into Manaphy. Before this event, Manaphy was only available through Pokemon Ranger or other special events, making this sea guardian quite difficult to obtain. You’ll be able to nab this elusive Pocket Monster from June 1-24 on the Nintendo Network.

July: Shaymin

Shaymin is a unique Pokemon because of its two forms. During its Land Form, Shaymin is only a Grass type, but upon transforming into its Sky Form, it becomes both a Grass and Flying type. Shaymin was one of the stars of film Pokemon: Giratina and the Sky Warrior and, like Celebi, associated with the growth of plant life. Shaymin’s special move, Seed Flare is a very powerful attack that also has a chance to lower its target’s Special Defense statistic. With abilities like this, Shaymin is a force to be reckoned with. Shaymin will be available through the Nintendo Network from July 1-24.

August: Arceus

Possibly the most powerful and unique Pokemon on this list, Arceus is credited with the creation of the Sinnoh and Ransei regions of the Pokemon world (and possibly even the entire Pokemon Universe). This normal type Pokemon is a guardian of the planet and the only Pokemon able to learn Judgment, a move which uses beams of light to attack its opponent with a 100% hit rate. If you want to own the potential creator of the Pokemon universe, you’ll have to wait until until August, when it will be available at Gamestop from the 1-24.

September: Victini

Victini is a Fire and Psychic type Pokemon that was previously only available through special events. As a Mythical Pokemon, Victini has an infinite amount of energy, which it can distribute to others by touch. The star of the double film White-Victini and Zekrom and Black-Victini and Reshiram, Victini is said to bring victory to its trainers, as well as has the ability to send visions to people. Although this one may seem cute and cuddly, Victini certainly has its fair share of powerful abilities. You can pick up Victini September 1-24 on the Nintendo Network.

October: Keldeo

Keldeo is a Water and Fighting type Pokemon that resembles a unicorn. As with most of the other Pokemon on this list, Keldeo was only available through special events. It made its anime debut in the film Kyurem VS. The Sword of Justice as a member of a group of quadruped Pokemon known as the Swords of Justice. Being a Water type, Keldeo is often seen running across water and can transform into its “Resolute Form” upon learning the Secret Sword Move, making it one pony you won’t want to mess with. Keldeo will be available on the Nintendo Network October 1-24.

November: Genesect

Metal Gear Genesect!…I mean…just Genesect. This Bug and Steel type Pokemon was revived from a fossil and altered by Team Plasma so that it is now an android with a back mounted cannon to boot. Depending on what drive it is equipped with, Genesect can become a Normal, Fire, Water, Electric, or Ice type, making it the one of the most versatile Pokemon to date. This November will be the second time that Genesect has been available, which you can pick up from the 1-24 at Gamestop.

December: Meloetta

Meloetta is a Mythical Pokemon with two forms, its first “Aria Form” is a Normal and Psychic type, while its “Pirouette Form” is a Normal and Fighting type. According to Pokemon Legend, Meloetta used to sing joy into the hearts of the people of the Pokemon world, but disappeared after losing its song due to the darkness in the world. This will be the second time that Meloetta has been available through an event, and you’ll be able to download this songster December 1-24 from the Nintendo Network.
