Coulson and company leap from hit TV series to Marvel Comics Universe.

Clark Gregg’s Agent Phil Coulson became the first original character of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to cross back over into the Marvel Comics Universe awhile ago, but now even more of the gang from his hit ABC series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. are set to join him in Marvel’s first big new title of 2015 (or last big new title of 2014, depending on how you count).

Set to debut in a series on December 31st midnight launch events, Marvel’s new ongoing title S.H.I.E.L.D. will be set in the continuity of the mainstream Marvel Universe (aka “Earth 616”) and feature comics incarnations of the aforementioned Coulson along with Melinda May, Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons. In a departure from their television status quo, the series (from fan-favorite author Mark Waid and a rotating art team) will framed around Coulson using his encyclopedic knowledge of the world’s superheroes to recruit specialized teams for key missions.

A series of variant covers, depicting the Agents interacting with various Marvel characters (plus Deadpool riffing on the compulsive alien writing storyline) has been released, along with preview pages offering a glimpse at Coulson’s personal history.

S.H.I.E.L.D’s first issue goes on sale December 31st.
