Assassin’s Creed Creative Director Leaves Ubisoft

In another bad break for Ubisoft Montreal, Assassin’s Creed Creative Director Patrice Désilets has left the studio.

Patrice got his start at Ubisoft Montreal back in 1999 as a lead designer on Hype: The Time Quest and took the reins as creative director for the first time in 2003 on the hit Prince of Persia reboot Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Assassin’s Creed in 2007, followed by the sequel in 2009, were even more impressive additions to his CV, which he may now be putting to good use.

The specifics behind his departure haven’t been revealed; it’s possible that the recent exodus of other talent could have led him to seek out greener pastures, or perhaps he was influenced by Ubisoft’s decision to sequelize Assassin’s Creed on an annual basis. The company’s only comment thus far has been the rather cryptic, “With his role on project essentially done, Patrice Désilets has decided to take a creative break from the industry and is no longer working on Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood.”

Regardless of the reason, Désilets’ resignation has to be bad news for Ubi’s Montreal operation, which in recent weeks has suffered the loss of numerous high-ranking veterans. Jade Raymond, Maxime Beland, Rima Brek and Alexandre Parizeau all left for Ubisoft’s new Toronto location last month, while Clint Hocking of Far Cry 2 and Splinter Cell fame decided to strike out on his own in April.
