Battlefield 2042 Arrives in October with Wild Dynamic Weather Events & 128-Player Matches

Our first look at Battlefield 2042 is here, and EA and DICE are making the franchise’s most bombastic entry yet. The latest in the series was revealed today during a special announcement event, featuring large-scale matches, destructive weather events, and lots of locations in an all-out war. While classic Battlefield gameplay in the modern setting will allow for high-octane action, Battlefield 2042‘s slightly futuristic take offers some more interesting spins, too — such as a robotic dog and wingsuit. Battlefield 2042 comes to PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X | S with a release date of Oct. 22, 2021.

Some maps in Battlefield 2042 support up to 128 players in a single match on PC and current-gen consoles, but players on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will be limited to 64 players and reduced map sizes. Additionally, EA and DICE are going all-in on multiplayer additions. For example, Battlefield 2042 seems to allow for lots of freedom to customize your loadout, and Specialists will allow players to jump into the boots of characters with specific traits and abilities. There’s also the new Hazard Zone game type, a high-stakes, squad-based mode.

EA and DICE shared that a gameplay reveal is scheduled to take place on June 13, 2021, but until then, you can watch the announcement in full below.

Battlefield 2042 has been a long time coming, and thanks to a number of leaks, we knew that already. EA and DICE’s decision to bring the series back to a more modern setting was reported on last year, for example, and the game’s name leaked just a few days ago. The previously leaked “never-bef0re-seen scale” was accurate as well.

However, Battlefield 2042‘s most egregious leak actually happened earlier today, only hours before the reveal live stream. Though the initial Reddit post that brought the information forward has been taken down, Okami on Twitter was able to capture and share the details. Regardless, the October release date of Battlefield 2042 is set in stone now.
