80s pop cherubs Tiffany and Debbie Gibson are fighting giant reptiles (and each other) in this weekend’s original SyFy movie.
SyFy’s Saturday Night movies are infamous for their Ed Wood-like quality, largely due to their cheesy effects, hammy acting, and generally ridiculous plots. This summer’s Sharktopus (produced by Roger Corman) seemed to be the channel’s cheesy opus, but now it looks like SyFy is trying to outdo itself with Mega Python Vs. Gatoroid, which stars 80s pop stars Tiffany and Debbie Gibson.
Here’s the movie’s plot, in a nutshell:
A fanatical animal rights advocate (Debbie Gibson) steals illegally imported exotic snakes from pet stores and sets them free in the Florida Everglades, where they grow and thrive in alarming sizes. Seeing this as an ecological threat to the Everglades, a female park ranger (Tiffany) injects the swamp’s alligators with large amounts of steroids, increasing their size to combat the snakes. This results in a colossal reptilian battle that threatens all of Florida.
This sounds both amazing and delightful, though I’m not sure what’s harder to believe: that reptiles can get that big or that Tiffany can convincingly play a park ranger who can manipulate animals’ genetics. One of the big selling points to this movie has been that the two pop stars will get into a major cat fight while wearing skimpy dresses. As a result, SyFy’s recently released a teaser video of the scene.
Mega Python vs. Gatoroid is set to air at 9 PM EST this Saturday.
