Blizzard is “Open-Minded” About Adding a Map Editor to Overwatch

You may be able to design your own Overwatch maps one day, but it won’t be anytime soon.

Overwatch has plenty of maps to enjoy, but what if you could make your own? Well, that just might happen sometime down the road, says game director Jeff Kaplan.

In a post on the game’s official forum, Kaplan said that although the team wants to do this, the fact that Overwatch is built on a brand new engine makes it more difficult and time consuming.

“We are extremely open-minded about releasing a map editor for Overwatch someday. But because Overwatch was made with a brand new engine, this is not a small task or one which can happen any time soon. We have this on our long-term road map and believe heavily in user-made content. But there are many challenges ahead of us and it will be a very long road before our editor can be made available to the public.”

While that’s certainly a ray of hope for those who are wishing for this feature to be added, it also makes it sound like it could be a good long while before it happens.

On a more immediate note, Kaplan says that Blizzard will soon be adding the ability to save highlights and play of the game footage without using an external capture program “before the end of the summer.” That’s definitely a good thing.
