DVD-Capable Wii to Release in Japan

Nintendo plans an enhanced, DVD-ready Wii for Japan.

Edge magazine, the leading UK gaming periodical, revealed in their September issue that Nintendo would be releasing an enhanced version of the Wii in Japan next year. This new Wii unit will include DVD-playback out of the box. No other word on differences between the basic Wii and the DVD-capable Wii have been announced, and there are currently no plans for a launch of the machine outside of Japan.

Nintendo launched the Nintendo Q in Japan shortly after the launch of the Gamecube in December, 2001. The Q, co-developed by Panasonic, was a stainless steel Gamecube featuring DVD-playback and Dolby 5.1 sound output. Nintendo did not release the Q outside of Japan.
