E3: Tanks for the 8 Minutes of Battlefield 3 Gameplay, EA

This article is over 13 years old and may contain outdated information

Tank-based desert combat and dinosaurs? This game has everything!

EA showed off this live onstage demo of DICE’s upcoming Battlefield 3 at its E3 2011 press conference, but now you can watch it without all the annoying speakers and sports games getting in the way.

In it, Corporal Jono Miller, one of the game’s new protagonists, plays with a toy dinosaur given to him by his son before he and his tank battalion engage enemy tanks of an unspecified nature. It’s full of explosions, and features some neat variety in gameplay – I’m not sure why Corporal Miller is the one calling in airstrikes instead of a higher-up, but let’s just run with it.

On the one hand, this game looks stunning and the tank combat seems engaging – and given that the Battlefield games have always had vehicle play, that’s a good thing. On the other hand, it’s really hard to feel like you’re being threatened and challenged when you’re mowing down fleeing enemies on foot from the well-armored cockpit of one of the most fearsome war machines ever created.

I guess you can’t have everything after all.
