With X-Men: Apocalypse about to reach theaters, Marvel’s Extraordinary X-Men team will kick off an “Apocalypse Wars” story arc in the comics.
Now that Apocalypse will soon kick off his grand schemes in X-Men: Apocalypse, it’s a great time to explore the comic book version of the character. Jeff Lemire and Humberto Ramos seem to agree, as they’ll be launching Marvel’s “Apocalypse Wars” event in the pages of Extraordinary X-Men. If you’re a fan of X-Men‘s time-traveling strangeness this might be a good time to start reading, thanks to a synopsis reading like a mixture of Days of Future Past and Age of Apocalypse.
“Apocalypse Wars” consists of three thematic story arcs, each telling the story of a different X-Men team facing Earth’s first mutant. Extraordinary X-Men opens the event when our heroes jettison mutantkind’s last hope into the timestream to keep it safe – only for Apocalypse to find it. Now the X-Men must travel into the future to set things right, not realizing a horrible surprise awaits them on the other side.
Marvel has released some initial art from the event, and while there’s no sign of Apocalypse, we do see Storm struggling with her leadership role and confiding in the fan-favorite Old Man Logan. However humble it may appear however, Extraordinary X-Men is promising to have the most cosmic scope of the three storylines, and potentially holds the biggest consequences for mutantkind moving forward. We’ll find out when Extraordinary X-Men launches on March 16, 2016.
