Fan Film Brings Assassin’s Creed to Salt Lake City

Altair’s free running doesn’t seem that out of place in a modern-day city.

As the Assassin’s Creed franchise moves from the Renaissance to the Revolutionary War, you may have wondered where else the series could be set. One might even imagine the story carrying on well into modern day, although a parkour-themed assassin’s guild would need to change the way it operates in cities rife with video cameras and sensor equipment. Still, even if it’s an impractical dream, we can always turn to fan films to fill in the gaps where game developers fear to tread. Such was the case with YouTube filmmaker Devin Graham, who decided to recreate Assassin’s Creed‘s parkour and free running elements in the far more contemporary Salt Lake City.

There’s no story or plot to speak of, save for “the Assassin’s Creed guy runs around in a modern city”, but what is there is impressively done and close enough in tone to the original games to make it worth a viewing. If I’d had a controller in my hand when first watching this video, part of me would have assumed that I was capable of directly controlling the character. The only things missing are the game’s trademark assassinations and police chases to keep the video from becoming an Assassin’s Creed pitch for Ubisoft.

For obvious safety reasons, the video can’t depict Altair leaping from skyscraper to skyscraper, so the biggest jump in the video required the addition of minor CG effects. Regardless, the remaining jumping and climbing sequences are ones I couldn’t do without falling on my face or breaking some bones, so credit is due to the actor for getting across Salt Lake City with a certain amount of grace and skill.

Now how about a futuristic city, filmmakers? Or do you think that’s something Ubisoft is saving for Assassin’s Creed 4?
