Niko, my cousin! Want to come and ride some big American jetpacks?
As nice as Liberty City is in Grand Theft Auto IV, there’s not a lot of space for things like farms, deserts, and secret military bases. That was really the purview of GTA IV’s predecessor, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which had the most expansive map of any GTA game to date. But an ambitious group of modders has decided that there’s no need for the two to remain separate, and is rebuilding San Andreas in the rather better looking GTA IV engine.
The project – called “Project AndReAGE,” a fusion of “Andreas” and “RAGE,” the name of the GTA IV engine – is a work in progress, but as you can see from the video, it’s still looking pretty darn good. According to a recent update, the map is about 50% done, although as the thirteen-person team has cut the map into 24 different pieces, so some areas are more complete than others. The team is also working hard to bring San Andreas’ vehicles to the mod, so hopefully players will be able to cruise around the map with a jetpack.
You can see more images from the mod, as well as keep up with its progress, on its development thread. Fingers crossed, it won’t be too long before a demo – or better yet, the mod itself – hits the internet.
