French Gadget Lets You Inhale Dinner for a Zero Calorie Meal

The European culinary trend of creating zero-calorie food-flavored air makes its way to Canada.

Have you ever eaten a delicious restaurant meal and then fretted about the calories you consumed? Then you might want to head to Ottawa to try out Le Whaf, which boils down ingredients before turning them into food clouds in a cauldron-like French gadget. The result is “vehicle of flavor” that can be inhaled with a straw without the guilt-inducing calories.

The trend originated in Europe, but Ottawa restaurant Juniper Kitchen and Wine Bar recently adopted the “novelty piece.” Chef Norman Aitken describes the cauldron as “a vase that has an ultrasound planted in the bottom of it, so it agitates the liquid hard enough and fast enough that it will create a cloud.” This apparently makes Le Whaf popular among dieters; one participant called it “a taste sensation without something in your mouth.”

Juniper doesn’t charge customers to try out Le Whaf, giving it another advantage over solid food. If the trend ever makes its way to the United States, it’s only a matter of time before we’ll be inhaling cheeseburgers, corn dogs, and deep fried Oreos.
