God of War Creator Approves of Multiplayer Inclusion

“I think it looks cool. It looks like another great, impeccably executed Sony Santa Monica game,” says Jaffe.

The response to news that God of War: Ascension will feature multiplayer has been mixed. Analyst, Michael Pachter, called the decision “odd” and said it wouldn’t “move the needle on sales,” and some have questioned whether allocating a portion of the game’s budget to multiplayer might affect the core campaign. However, series creator, David Jaffe, who worked on the first two God of War games, seems to be okay with the decision.

“If it turns out to be the case that the single player is watered down because of it, then I think they have some justification. But I don’t see any evidence of that, and I don’t see evidence of that based on the team [Sony Santa Monica] they are,” he told IGN.

Apparently the God of War team has been toying with multiplayer for a while, albeit more in the vein of a story-driven co-op adventure rather than a competitive multiplayer mode. He did add that giving Kratos a partner wouldn’t have gelled with his angry “one man army” archetype. Still, competitive multiplayer or no, Jaffe has given his seal of approval to the game.

“I think it looks cool. It looks like another great, impeccably executed Sony Santa Monica game,” he added.

God of War: Ascension is currently scheduled for release in Spring 2013.
