The latest Nexus features a 1440p display, 2.7 GHz quad-core CPU, and “turbo charging technology.”
What was a rumor roundup yesterday is a confirmed product today, as Google has finally unveiled the Nexus 6 smartphone, Nexus 9 tablet, and a new streaming device for your TV.
First up, the Nexus 6 is indeed being built by Motorola, and it seems to share a number of features with the upcoming Verizon exclusive Droid Turbo. The above reveal video confirms a number of these features, including a 2.7 GHz quad-core CPU, a 5.96-inch 2560×1440 AMOLED display, dual front-facing speakers, and a 13 MP camera with optical image stabilization. Turbo charging tech is also on-board, which Google says allows for “up to six hours of use” after 15 minutes of charging. The 3,220 mAh battery will last over 24 hours when fully charged. The RAM amount has not yet been disclosed, so we’re not sure if it’s 2 GB or 3 GB.
Moving up the device scale, there’s a new Nexus 9 tablet, too, which is built by HTC. Along with being the first HTC tablet since the Flyer, the Nexus 9 is one of the first non-Nvidia-made products to feature a 64-bit Tegra K1 CPU, which sits underneath an 8.9-inch 2048×1536 IPS LCD display. Other hardware specs include 2 GB of RAM, a 6,700 mAh battery, LTE, an 8 MP rear camera, and a 1.6 MP front camera.
Last but not least is the announcement of the Nexus Player, which is an Asus-built, Android-powered streaming puck for your TV. (Seriously, it’s a hockey puck.) The Nexus Player is Google’s answer for Roku, Apple TV, and Amazon’s FireTV, and it’s remote and optional gamepad prove as much. Powered by a dual-core Intel Atom CPU, the Player should be able to handle your Android games of choice without straining, while bringing all your streaming choices into the fold (Netflix, HBO Go, etc.).
All of the new hardware will be running Android 5.0, formerly known as Android L, and now nicknamed Lollipop (read more about the OS here). The new OS will also be pushing out to the Nexus 5 phone, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 tablet, and various “Google Play Edition” devices in the coming weeks.
The Nexus 9 and Nexus Player will be available for pre-order on October 17th, and will ship November 3rd, while the Nexus 6 is a little more ambiguous with a “available for pre-order in late October and in stores in November,” tagline. The unlocked version will cost $649 in the Google Play store, and all major carriers will support the phone.
