Grand Theft Auto IV DLC May Slip Into 2009

Producer Dan Houser is unsure whether or not Microsoft’s $50 million dollar deal will make it to consoles on time.

It has been more than two years since Microsoft took center stage at E3 2006 and proclaimed that not only would the PlayStation exclusive Grand Theft Auto series be coming to the 360, but it would include exclusive downloadable episodes to extend the life of the game as well.

Within the span of those two years we found out just how much those episodes were costing Microsoft ($25 million for the first episode and another $25 million for the second upon completion), Grand Theft Auto IV went on to sell more than 10 million copies worldwide and recent television commercials continue to tout these mythical, exclusive episodes for the Xbox 360 coming “this fall.” Despite, of course, having never shown any evidence as to their existence. So, it seems perfectly natural at this point to ask Rockstar, do you still plan on releasing those episodes? This year, specifically?

“I’m not sure. It’s going well” says Rockstar co-founder and GTA IV producer, Dan Houser. “But we don’t know a date. We hope to be announcing that in the next few weeks. We’re still figuring out a few things. We’re more focused on quality than dates, always have been. But the development is going really good. It’s shaping up to be something we’re very proud of.”

Houser refers to the digital launch of this content as “virgin territory,” as it’s something Rockstar has never tried before. He also goes on to play the expectations game a bit, saying that he doesn’t want players to imagine that it’s “this enormous thing that it can never be.” Considering how under wraps the content has been and under what nature it’s been developed, it’s understandable that a lot of folks out there are very, very hyped.
