HDTVs Will Drive 360 Sales, Says MS Official

A desire to put new HDTVs through their paces will inspire consumers to keep picking up Xbox 360s at a brisk pace, a Microsoft official predicted.

Alan Bowman, General Manager for Etertainment and Devices in the Asia Pacific and Greater China area, told Dow Jones in an interview that consumers will want to maximize their return on newly purchased HDTVs despite fears of a looming recession in the US.

“If people are going to buy HDTVs, they’re going to want to put content through that,” he asserted.

The PS3 also takes advantage of HDTVs – and comes with a Blu-ray player to boot. Furthermore, many HDTV users are using analog signals and have not purchased actual HDTV content.

Nonetheless, Bowman expressed optimism about the Xbox Live Video Marketplace and its ability to provide TV programs and movies to consumers. He also asserted the 360’s attach rate bested that of the Wii and the PS3 in the US market.
