Hearthstone Reveals Single-Player Adventure Mode

Hearthstone Curse of Naxxramas

Hearthstone‘s Curse of Naxxramas will pit players against plague-bearing undead in a PvE expansion to the collectible card game.

Hearthstone is a game I have yet to try, but others at The Escapist just love it to death so I’ll likely play it at some point. Still, I’m always a little reluctant to play games based solely around competitive multiplayer; I generally lean more to single-player or co-op modes, and Hearthstone doesn’t have either to speak of. Thankfully, that’s going to change very soon. Today at PAX East, Blizzard revealed the single-player Adventure Mode that will convert Hearthstone into a PvE experience: Curse of Naxxramas: A Hearthstone Adventure.

Curse of Naxxramas is set in an ancient necropolis where the lich Kel’Thuzad has built a plague-bearing undead army. Players will descend into the dungeon’s five wings to take on all-new boss characters, including the giant arachnid Maexxna, the fungal Loatheb, and the plague cauldron master Heigan the Unclean. Each boss carries their own unique cards and Hero Powers to use against you, while defeating them will reward you with new cards for your collection. Altogether, Curse of Naxxramas will add 30 new cards to Hearthstone, nine class challenges to increase difficulty, and a new game board with “interactive corners”.

Curse of Naxxramas will launch for PC, Mac, and iPad simultaneously, but will release individual dungeon wings over the course of five weeks. The first wing, “The Arachnid Corner”, will be available for free, while the others can be purchased with in-game or real-world funds. It’s also worth noting that even if you don’t participate in Adventure Mode, the new cards will appear in your Arena picks, which is a nice touch.

The release date for Curse of Naxxramas has yet to be announced, so there’s still lots of time to practice with Hearthstone‘s core game. Whether you’ll be patient with any new and unfamiliar players you’re matched with is your call.
