Universal Studios and Blumhouse have “fast-tracked” production of a remake of 1982’s The Thing, which itself was a remake of 1951’s The Thing from Another World.

Those earlier films were based on John W. Campbell’s novella Who Goes There?, while the new one will also take inspiration from a freshly discovered novel-length manuscript of that original story. Sci-fi author John Betancourt first revealed the existence of that manuscript, Frozen Hell, via a Kickstarter campaign back in 2018.

Frozen Hell expands on the novella with new backstory and context.

As reported by Bloody Disgusting, news of the remake first broke last week, when producer Alan Donnes wrote in a now-deleted Facebook post, “I am Executive Producing a remake of THE THING but with additional chapters of John Campbell’s groundbreaking novel, Frozen Hell, that had been lost for decades.”

Betancourt later followed that message with a Kickstarter update: The “movie will be from Universal and Blumhouse. Everyone is super excited about it, and it’s being fast-tracked.”

He also hinted that more projects may already be in the works, writing that “This is just the tip of the iceberg of what’s going on with Who Goes There?Frozen Hell, and The Thing in Hollywood. I can’t talk about the rest yet, but it’s very exciting.”
