Huge Papercraft Green Hill Zone Celebrates Sonic’s Birthday

This 68-inch-tall papercraft sculpture of Sonic the Hedgehog‘s iconic Green Hill Zone may be the best Sonic-related thing made in the last ten years. Yeah, I went there.

Earlier today, we posted about a rather magnificent Super Mario Bros. papercraft statue, so now it’s only fitting that we do the same for the other major player in the early 90s platform wars. You see, last month was the 19th anniversary of the release of the original Sonic the Hedgehog, which means that the series’ fans want to do something to celebrate the character they know and love.

In this case, “something” means constructing a giant papercraft diorama representing all of the major elements of the Green Hill Zone from the first Sonic the Hedgehog. Clocking in at about 68 inches tall (and some less-than-exact dimensions for the width and depth), this papercraft sculpture has all of the little details you remember: loop-de-loops, invincibility boxes, power rings, and those stupid little fishes that jumped out of the water to eat your face off.

It’s a labor of love that supposedly took about a week to build, and yet one that still ends up feeling superior to every 3D Sonic experience created since the first Sonic Adventure.
