id Gearing Up for Another New Project

Now that id Software can reach into the very deep pockets of Bethesda without fear of being slapped, the studio is planning to assemble a “full third team” to begin development on a new, unannounced project.

In the wake of last week’s surprise announcement of id’s purchased by ZeniMax Media, the parent company of Bethesda Softworks, both companies said they would continue to operate largely as they always had, with the added bonus for id that it would have access to far greater development resources than it had in the past. Today it was announced that the studio was already gearing up to take advantage of its new situation, putting together plans to assemble a new development team to work on an unannounced project.

“They have a team working on Rage, which will be published by EA next year, and they have a second team working on Doom 4,” said Pete Hines, Bethesda’s vice president of public relations. “They’d like to start building up a full third team and, as a result of this deal, they’ll be able to do that more quickly than they could have previously with the additional resources they have to work with now.”

No word on what that third team will be doing, of course. A new Catacombs 3D title, perhaps? Hexen 3? Quake 5? The possibilities are endless. One can only hope that with its new-found ability to focus on in-house development, id will be able to come up with games that will help return it to the prominence it once enjoyed.
