id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead has teased a few details about what Doom 4 will be like, as well announcements of “new stuff” to come at this year’s E3.

In an interview with Gamespot id CEO Todd Hollenshead dropped a few hints about the upcoming Doom 4 as well as some big announcements coming at E3, but don’t get your hopes too high: the game’s not coming for a good long while.

“It’s not preproduction, but we’re still early on in that,” Hollenshead said. “The team is relatively new. We’re still actually hiring people for the team as well, so it’s not completely built out. But we really just started on that last year. It’s very much deep in development.”

Being “deep in development,” id’s got to have a pretty clear idea what the game’s going to be like, right? Hollenshead seems to: “It’s not a sequel to Doom 3, but it’s not a reboot either. Doom 3 was sort of a reboot. It’s a little bit different than those, and if I told you why, I would get my ass kicked when I got back.”

So it’s going to be different but not different? Hollenshead assured that fans that Doom 4 will still be as Doom as any other game in the series. He’s not afraid of fan backlash – which I suppose we should take as a good sign. “Everything I’ve seen on it is classic Doom, so I don’t really have worries that people aren’t going to like it and start talking about it,” he said.

As for what the company will be showing at E3 (they won’t have a booth since they’re not in the ESA, but will have games on display at other publishers’ displays), all Hollenshead will say is “that we’ll have some new stuff at E3 that we haven’t announced yet.” Apparently id are working with some “partners” on this new stuff and Hollenshead has to talk with them before he says anything, otherwise “that would be another subject of me getting my ass kicked.”
