John Carmack Offers To Return To QuakeCon

John Carmack says he’s willing to speak at QuakeCon again this year, if organizers will let him.

It was announced yesterday that the 2014 edition of QuakeCon, the long-running and largest “Bring-Your-Own-Computer” LAN party in North America, will take place from July 17 to July 20 at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas, Texas. It’s open to the public and admission is free, so if you’re going to be in the area, you might want to swing by and check it out.

This year’s event is particularly interesting because it will be the first one ever to take place without John Carmack at the helm of Id Software. Carmack’s annual keynotes have been a QuakeCon fixture, but he left the studio in November 2013 to concentrate on his new role as chief technical officer at Oculus VR.

Yesterday, however, Carmack said he’s willing to keep up the QuakeCon tradition as long as organizers are cool with the idea. “I have offered to give my traditional talk at QuakeCon, we’ll see if it is accepted,” he tweeted.

It’s not really clear who specifically would make the call, but it would presumably fall under the jurisdiction of Id parent company ZeniMax Media. But given Carmack’s stature and history with the event, it seems a little odd that there’s a question about whether he’ll be allowed to appear. I mean, assuming he’s not going to get up and say terrible things about Lynda Carter, why wouldn’t you want him there? We’ve reached out to Bethesda to see what’s what, and we’ll let you know what we hear.
